Beginner's Guide to EP C
what the hell is epicmafia
it is a game, and the players are separated into the village and the mafia. village's goal is to figure out who the mafia is and lynch 'em all. mafia's goal is to not die long enough to make the number of villagers equal to the number of mafia.
games are separated into a day and a night phase; at night, the mafia gets together and kills someone, and also all the other roles act independently: there are special villagers like the doctor, who picks one person and if the mafia targets that person they won't die, and the cop, who picks one person and finds out if that person is a villager or the mafia. some mafia members have extra actions besides killing, too, like the hooker, who picks one villager and whoever they pick doesn't get to perform their night action (so the doctor doesn't get to protect, the cop doesn't get to investigate, etc.).
also there are some third party roles with their own goals independent of everyone else: the prophet gets to pick a day and if the game ends on that day, they win; the angel gets randomly assigned one person at the beginning of the game and if that person survives, they win, and once a game they can die in their target's place
the day phase starts with the results of all the night actions—we find out who died, the cop privately gets their report, etc., and then everyone gets to talk and decide who to lynch, if anyone, via vote; whoever has the most votes on them dies, or "no one" has the most votes and no one dies
here is a list of all the roles with explanations. in each game, the list of roles is shown and you can hover over the icons for that same explanation.
how does this ic group work
basically how ic epicmafia works: you play the game but you do it with an account for your character
there really is not a lot of structure to how we do things, honestly; we carry CR from game to game but that's about the most coherent we get, we're chill as hell. plurks are made like "HEY WHO WANTS TO PLAY," do a headcount, and make a game for that many people. game ends, rinse and repeat. you are free to jump in and out at your leisure, change characters as you please, whatever. there isn't a taken list or anything, just pick someone and bring 'em in. sometimes we have doubles but this is rare honestly—the only instance i can think of offhand is that we have two different people who play Dhaos from Tales Of, sometimes at the same time, in the same game, which is always absolutely hilarious.
we definitely focus on ic interactions more than how you're Supposed to play the game—like we have a robot OC in sometimes who can't kill anyone because she's bound to the first law of robotics and so when she gets mafia she just fucking doesn't kill anyone, and the day comes along and everyone's like WOW OUR DOCTOR'S REALLY GOOD AT THINGS and our poor tiny android goes okay, i'm done now.
there's a third party role, the anarchist, who picks someone to give a bomb at night and everyone spends the day playing hot potato with it until it explodes and kills someone, and i play Emmeryn sometimes and the last time the bomb was handed to her she just kinda went OKAY, WELL, THIS IS MINE NOW, and held it until it fucking exploded and she died instead of handing it off to anyone. one time she got gunsmith, a village role that picks someone at night and they get a gun they can shoot to kill someone with during the day, and just fucking didn't give out any guns at all
SO, NO ONE MINDS TERRIBLY IF YOU ARE BAD AT THE GAME, WHATEVER
game chat is all ic, graveyard included; pregame and post-game chats are ooc.
we denote actions with a backslash like "/shrugs"
icly it's treated like a temporary jamjar of sorts; details are not really extrapolated on, but generally when a new character comes to play for the first time they're like "all right what the FUCK is THIS BULLSHIT" while the regular crew is like "this shit again," and someone decent and reasonable from the regular crew goes "welcome to murder village buddy have i got some FUN EXPLANATIONS FOR YOU"
death is treated as real, but temporary; people are definitely actually dying and it kinds of hurts and all, but everyone comes back.
getting started
make an account on epicmafia, name, icon, and set it up like you would with an rp journal. an email address makes one account with one username/password, and you are allowed two "alternate accounts" with different usernames and icons that you can setup by going to "player" and picking the little icon with three tiny people. you can switch between them with the little arrow icon on that page.
you can make as many accounts as you want using the +1 email trick or multiple emails, but epicmafia has some ip ban timer system whatever that keeps you from logging in and out and in and out, but since hola turned out to be trash you can get around that using zenmate (or whatever IP changer you might have but i use zenmate and it's nice).
if you would like to spectate some games before deciding whether or not to join in you may! when we do a headcount just let us know you want to watch and once all the players are in and the room is full, i'll ping you so you can watch everything go down.
if you're having any problems with the epicmafia site, try 1) using chrome, if you aren't already; 2) using incognito mode (some plugins block the captcha required to sign up), 3) disabling adblock, and if all else fails, 4) asking us! we'll try to help troubleshoot
miscellaneous epm site tips and tricks
double-clicking a line of text will repost it in the chat as a quote, but you can't do it with a whisper
you can make a person's icon appear by typing their username with a % in front of it: so "%felissaty" will make a tiny version of felissaty's icon to appear
whispers have a chance of leaking. i think like 10% normally? which means instead of the line being private, people who aren't the person you're whispering to (sometimes everyone, sometimes only a few people) will see the line that you whispered, too. there's some text that says "leak" next to the text box when you're whispering to someone. if you click it then you can purposely leak that whisper to everyone, either for strategic purposes or just to let everyone hear a conversational snippet out of context for the sake of ic hilarity
